How Much can be Earned from Blogging?

The potential is limitless and one can make as much as they want but you can not understand the answer until you know how blogging works. So let me first tell you how money is made through blogging and then it will be easy for you to understand.
Blogging is the act of writing blogs. A blog is the advance type of a website where the most recent articles are shown on the front page. For example TechCrunch.com is one of the popular blog where you can find the latest information in the field of Technology. If you visit the TechCrunch blog, you will notice that all the articles are shown in reverse chronological order (the most recent post appears first).
A Blog is just like a website but they are dynamic in nature. Means that information are shown in reverse chronological order.
Now lets take TechCrunch.com as an example and let me explain how TechCrunch is making money from this blog.
The first way to make money via a blog is to display Advertisements. TechCrunch.com has displayed different advertisements on its blog.
For example one is in the header location and the other is in the right sidebar. (The Ads may be different at the time you visit the blog, however the location will be the same with different ads)
Blogging Advertisements
These advertisements are the first source of income for TechCrunch.com. The more advertisements TechCrunch gets the more money they make. But there are different types of advertisements and every advertisement makes money in different ways. For example;
  • PPC Advertisements
  • CPM Advertisements
  • Direct Advertisements
  • Sponsored Reviews
In TechCrunch case they charge on the basis of CPM. Which means that once 1,000 people see the advertisement, TechCrunch will get paid for it. So if a company or individual want to advertise on TechCrunch.com they will need to pay on CPM basis. The rate is determined by the TechCruch owner because he is managing the advertisements using their own system. However the rate depends on the amount of traffic coming to the TechCrunch.com, the regions traffic is coming from and the number of users engaging with their content. The higher the numbers the higher is the price for advertising.
The monthly traffic to TechCrunch.com blog is 14.7 Million. According to WikiPedia the revenue of TechCrunch in the year of 2007 was $2.4 Million.
Now the last question that needs to be answered is that how TechCrunch.com is getting traffic and from where people are coming to their blog.
TechCrunch gets traffic from different sources;
  1. Search Engines (For example Google, Yahoo and Bing etc…)
  2. Social Networking Sites (For example FaceBook, Google Plus, Twitter, Pinterest etc…)
  3. Referral Traffic (For example you click the link from my article and visit TechCrunch.com)
  4. Direct Visitors
These are the different sources from where TechCrunch is getting 14.7 Million visitors every month and that too for FREE.
Now lets get back to the original question that how much you can make money with blogging.
Blogs are of different types and can be used for different purposes. However if you wanted to create a blog just like the TechCurnch.com and you succeeded to bring at least 15,000 to 30,000 people every month to your blog then you could be making roughly $100 to $300 from it. Although it depends on different factors but this is just an estimated example based on my personal experience.
There are other types of blogs known as “Affiliate Blogs” which can make you more then $1000/month even with just a few thousands visitors a month. So it all depends how you will be using your blog and in the upcoming chapters I will be explaining all the different types of blogs.
Overall this is how blogging works.
You create a blog > Bring traffic to it > Display advertisements to them > and they make money for you.
The main thing in blogging is traffic. The more traffic you have the more money you will be making from it. As I mentioned earlier there are different ways for traffic generation. The first and free way is Google.com and other Search engines. These search engines are used by billions of users to find different information and you can take advantage from them to bring the user to your blog.
Once you create a blog you will need to list it in all the search engines so that users can find your blog when they search in Google.
The process for listing your blog in the search engines is known as Search Engine Optimization. It is a free process and every one can follow it. The process consist of some rules and guidelines that you will need to follow to get listed in the search engines. I will be explaining the process in the upcoming chapters.
The 2nd free way to get people to your blog is through Social Networking websites. For example FaceBook.com, Twitter.com and other social networking sites. These websites are accessed by billion users from around the globe. As a blogger when you share your blog or one of its article in these social networking websites, you can get thousands of traffic in a single day.
The process of getting traffic from social networking website is known as Social Media Marketing and I will be explaining this in detail in the upcoming chapters.
Apart from these methods there are several other ways that can be used to bring visitors to a blog. All the methods will be explained step-by-step in the next chapters.
This is how blogging works however ultimately it will depend on your efforts and dedication. If you can work 3 to 4 hours a day then I recommend to start blogging because this is one of the most profitable business that can generate unlimited cash for you.
